Days past after his lunch with the gorgon and while Alustin was tempted to approach her again, he couldn't shake the feeling he'd intruded, despite her silent assurances. Perhaps it was the fact the room had obviously been set aside or at least used as a space for the small number of non-human sentients who attended the Skyhold University. He'd nearly decided to avoid the room when he received a letter inviting him to lunch there again. A letter signed Miccia, which he took to be the name of the gorgon, since he'd spoken to no one else in the room that day.

Alustin entered the dinning area to meet Miccia but was stopped by a huge non-human whose species Alustin didn’t know. Tall and incredibly broad, with ash gray skin and huge tusk-like teeth, the person got into Alustin’s personal space in a most intimidating manner.

“Why are you here, human? Your kind have many rooms, rooms your teachers keep us from.”

“I’m sorry, I don’t mean to intrude. I was invited.”

Lips and tusks twisted into a sneer. “I’m sure you were. I didn’t though and I don’t like your smell.”

“Leave off, Demtr. He’s here for Miccia and myself. We vouch for him and accept any responsibility for him.”

Disappointed, Demtr sniffed but jabbed a finger into Alustin’s chest. “Be good.”

Alustin staggered under the finger jab and when Demtr walked away, looked towards the newcomer while rubbing his chest. That was certainly going to bruise. The speaker was a nekori, the seclusive cat-like species that was a neighbor to the gorgon kingdom. Short gray fur covered her with the occasional strip of black. Smiling, Alustin held out his hand. "Thank you for that."

The nekori frowned and stared at his hand. "Don't thank me. If it were up to me, I would have let him scare you off. Follow me." And with that she stalked off, leaving Alustin to hurry after her. She was quick footed and Alustin had to push himself to keep up, which was an accomplishment given he towered over her and his legs were much longer. Although she did have the advantage of not having to dodge or sidestep attempts at tripping him. The mood of the room was definitely antagonistic and he was quite certain it would be best to make other meeting arrangements in the future. This was their space and they did not wish to share it, no matter if he were invited or not.

Miccia looked up with a silent smile as they approached, but as before, she did not meet his eyes. He smiled in return, avoiding her gaze as well. "It is good to see you again. Thank you for the invitation," he said and took a seat. The nekori glared at him, having already seated herself.

Alustin paused and looked over the main dining hall. He wasn't sure if he was up to the usual social banter and jockeying today, though the gossip was usually worth the trouble. As well as what details he could glean from older students about the teachers. Still, he felt the urge for some peace and quiet this time and so he ducked into one of the smaller rooms before any of his peers could truly spot him. It took a few of the smaller rooms before he found a table with any room, and then it was in a room populated mostly with non-human species. He paused again, this time due more to past prejudices which he set aside and stepped in.

As he made his way to the table with seats he'd spotted, he nodded polite greeting to the stares he was receiving and fought down the growing feeling of awkwardness. It was far too late to change his mind now. Closer to the table now, he could see the sole occupant was a gorgon. Alustin stepped to the side to approach within eyesight, and then nodded a brief greeting. "Hello. Would you mind sharing the table?"

The gorgon didn't respond at first, which left Alustin rethinking a retreat, but finally nodded. Just as Alustin was about to sit, the gorgon held up a hand to stop him and then gestured towards their plate of dead mice.

"Oh, I don't mind. I am sure my food preferences are just as strange for you." He could see a slight smile on the gorgon's face and so Alustin took that as a good sign. He also noticed the gorgon had not raised their face to look at him; a cultural thing perhaps? He decided to keep his gaze at the tables surface to be sure. "I am Alustin, Alustin Haber."

He waited again for a response, and not getting one, shrugged internally and set to his meal. After a few bites, he spoke up again. "If I am over-stepping or if this is rude for your culture, I would be happy to leave you be."

The gorgon waved a dismissive gesture, which left Alustin wondering if gorgons didn't speak to outsiders. He knew they had language, he'd read books of theirs, but he'd never heard one speak. "Excellent. If you change your mind, let me know how best you can. Is my talking to you alright?"

The gorgon nodded an affirmative, so Alustin continued talking. He spoke of a few details of his life and classes, and was careful to phrase any questions he might have for the gorgon as yes or no answers, since they didn't seem to want to speak. Soon enough his lunch was completed, as was the gorgon's, and so he stood to take his leave.

"Thank you for sharing your table with me. I would like to eat with you again sometime if that would be acceptable?" At the gorgon's nod and smile, he smiled as well and gathered his things. Today's lunch had proven quite interesting after all. He should become acquainted with more non-human species, he decided.
